Game Making with MakeCode
Create your first video game with MakeCode. Students in grades 3-12 work with a live instructor to design a character, add movement, and build simple challenges—then watch their game come to life. A fun, beginner-friendly way to spark creativity and problem-solving.
In this engaging class, students in grades 3 through 12 discover the thrill of making their very first video game! Working alongside experienced instructors, students learn game development fundamentals in a fun, beginner-friendly environment.
Each session, students will:
- Design and customize their own game characters
- Add movement and controls to bring characters to life
- Create simple game challenges and obstacles
- Deploy and share their finished games
This hands-on course sparks creativity, builds problem-solving skills, and gets kids excited about technology—all while having fun! No prior coding experience needed. All students leave with playable games they can share with friends and family.
How to enroll
Welcome...before your first day of class, we have some HOMEWORK for you!
Please have your student set up an account on GitHub. This is a TWO STEP PROCESS. First, on the GitHub site create a username and password which can be easily remembered by student. This account will be used to save class work on the first day (and each day thereafter). Second, after the account is created, GitHub will send you a verification email. You will need to open this email and follow the instructions for account verification. GitHub is a site which stores their code in the cloud so students can access it from home. It will enable students to build and organize their professional portfolio of work. Students will also be able to share their projects with you at home!
Email: info@jointheleague.org, and include your student's name and their new GitHub username (you can send the password as well if you think they may forget it).
Upload a profile picture for your child. Their photo may be used both internally and on social media in announcements, such as when they level up. Please let us know if you do not want their photo to be used.
- Login to the parent portal
- On the right side menu under "People you manage" click on your child's name.
- On their right side menu select "Photos"
- Click on "New Profile Photo" and upload your child's photo
